[Design Lab Ep. #002] Designing a Neurodiversity-Informed Facilitation Program

Robin Fox

In this live design lab, facilitator and coach Erica Marx works with educator and improv actor Robin Fox as she shapes a 10‑week certificate program on facilitation grounded in nervous system awareness and embodiment. Together they clarify the program’s focus, pacing, and arc of learning so participants can truly integrate what they learn. The session explores how to design experiences that help facilitators stay grounded, responsive, and inclusive, while drawing on neurodiversity, applied improvisation, and embodied presence

Design Challenge

Robin brought a 10-session program combining nervous system awareness, neurodiversity, applied improvisation, and embodied presence, and named that she had too many ideas. The central challenge was to shape Session 1 and the overall arc so it was not overloaded, had realistic pacing, and allowed participants enough time to process and integrate.

What we Talked About

Erica Marx and Robin clarified the core focus of the program: the facilitator’s body and nervous system as the primary instrument in the room. Using a simple five-part arc (connection, goals, shift perspective, integrate, action), they explored how Session 1 can orient participants to the 10‑week journey, help them notice their current relationship with their body, and run a few focused activities that surface how their nervous system responds.

Design Takeaways

The main shift was to simplify and slow Session 1, giving it one clear outcome: helping facilitators become aware of their existing relationship with their own body and nervous system, and normalizing a wide range of experience. Robin left with a clearer design spine for the program, a better sense of which elements belong in later sessions, and a commitment to treat the first cohort as an experimental, learning-focused journey rather than a finished product.
